SAAHE New Student Orientation
Get ready to meet your fellow cohort members, as well as faculty and staff that you will work with in the coming year. The Fall Orientation program usually occurs the weekend just prior to classes. Following the SAAHE New Student Orientation, there will be a dinner reception hosted at one of the faculty members' homes.
Other Orientation Programs at Texas A&M for new graduate students to attend:
- Graduate Student Orientation - early September http://ogs.tamu.edu/
- Your Department/Office of Employment: The department where you will be working may also have an orientation or specialized training program. Please contact your assistantship supervisor for more information about dates.
SAAHE Retreat
There will be a SAAHE retreat held in early September for all current SAAHE students. The agenda items, times, and location will be shared at a later date.
Web Resources you may need before you arrive:
For the Record
Please help us keep in touch with you by sending your latest contact information to Joyce Nelson at (979) 847-9098 or jnelson@tamu.edu. You should also make sure your contact information is up-to-date on the official university record system: http://howdy.tamu.edu.
Registration for Classes & Fee Options Joyce Nelson (jnelson@tamu.edu) will be registering all SAAHE students for all of the common classes throughout the program. Joyce is also an excellent person to contact at any time should any admitted student have any academic questions.
Once students are registered by Joyce and are officially in the student record system, students can then sign up for any fee options that they may wish to have such as a meal plan, parking pass, football tickets, etc. Each student will need to add the options themselves since there are many options. To do so, go to the registration website (http://register.tamu.edu/). You can read about all of the fees, including the optional ones, on the financial services web page: http://finance.tamu.edu/sbs/tuition.
Financial Aid, Out-of-State Tuition Waivers and Tuition Remission
If you need to explore financial aid options, please visit the Financial Aid website: http://financialaid.tamu.edu/. You will need to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form to be considered for any scholarships, grants, loans, etc. You can find this form under the "Forms" link or under the "What's Hot" drop down box at the top of the page.
If you are coming To Texas A&M from out of state, make sure you complete a waiver form for in-state tuition. The OGS website explains more about what each student will need to do to receive the waiver. Almost all SAAHE students have assistantships and qualify for the waiver. Each student's supervisor will have to sign off on the form and then forward the form to the Office of Graduate Studies. Incoming students can begin taking care of the form now or can wait until they move to the area. Students should be able to turn it in about a week before school begins and still receive the waiver. Please note, though, that until the waiver is turned in, each student's tuition bill will not reflect the waiver. The University needs to have the form on file before they adjust tuition bills. Students may be in for some sticker shock if they view a tuition bill without the waiver applied.
Also remember that all students with graduate assistantship positions working in areas closely associated with their academic field of study will receive 9 hours of in-state tuition remission. Please remember that in the first semester incoming SAAHE students are required to take 12 hours of classes, so this will mean that students are responsible for paying fees and for 3 in-state tuition credit hours.
Professional Development Opportunities during the first semester
- Practicum Information (coming soon)
- The Association of Future Student Affairs Professionals (AFSAP)
The Association of Future Student Affairs Professionals (AFSAP) is a student organization affiliated with the SAAHE academic program and serves as a resource for faculty, staff and students involved in the program. The organization provides an opportunity for its members to develop supplemental skills necessary for success in the field of Student Affairs. Students provide and receive support, interact with professionals, discuss and learn about services, and plan and implement developmental programs. Regularly scheduled meetings highlight professional issues, common concerns, and coordination of activities. Programs and retreats focus on advising skills, resume writing, interviewing, conference presentations and publications among other topics. AFSAP allows current SAAHE students to help the program develop and change to meet the needs of future students. It also provides rich social and service opportunities for its members.
