Area Students Recognized For Principal Art Contest

More than 20 students and their parents, accompanied by art teachers and principals, crowded into a room at the College Station Hilton to be acknowledged for being chosen by their schools for their award-winning drawings of their school principals.

In its second consecutive year, the "Children's Perceptions of the School Leader" art contest awarded students in the Brazos Valley with Texas A&M University medals, certificates and ice cream for their artwork. Awards and refreshments were provided through the generous support of the Barbara Bush Literacy Corps.

Cheyene Chapell, fourth grader at Krause Elementary School in Brenham, represented her school and principal, Michael Ogg.

"Mr. Ogg and his staff take care of the kids at our school," Chapell said. "He wears funny ties like Tasmanian Devil and Scooby Doo. He dyed his hair pink for AR points last year and let us dunk him in a dunking booth. He is a very nice and funny principal."

Yeowon Ahn, seventh grader at A&M Consolidated Middle School in College Station, drew her principal, Nkrumah Dixon.

"Instead of just greeting students like some principals do, Mr. Dixon tries to memorize our names and to get to know us better," Ahn said. "He once came to my lunch table and asked my friends and me for our names."

Jasmine Otero, second grader at Alton Elementary School in Brenham, displayed artwork describing her principal Calvin Kossie.

"He loves all the kids - any color!" Otero said. "I want to be a principal when I grow up because I think I could be a good leader too. Maybe I could be a principal of his grandchildren."

In early September, students from across the Brazos Valley submitted a drawing of their campus principal, along with a one-paragraph description of either their principal or the school that they attend. Each campus was responsible for selecting one drawing to represent their campus at the art contest.

The art contest was held as a part of the Annual 2006 Administrative Leadership Institute and was sponsored by the Texas A&M Principals' Center.
