Brazos Valley Students Participate In "Draw Your School Principal" Contest11/3/05 By Jenna Smith Students across the Brazos Valley are participating in a "Draw Your School Principal" contest sponsored by The Principals' Center at Texas A&M University. Luana Zellner, director of The Principals' Center, is hosting the contest in conjunction with the Administrative Leadership Institute (ALI). "The participation has been amazing. We have over 20 pictures and stories from kids ranging in age from 5 to 18 years old," Zellner said. The pictures and stories will be complied into a book, with proceeds benefiting the Barbara Bush Literacy Corp. "We are in the process of finding the help to publish the book of contest winners," Zellner said. "Not only are the children excited to see their drawing in print, but sales from the book will benefit a wonderful literacy organization." Bryan, College Station, Navasota, Somerville, Caldwell and Snook ISDs were invited to participate in the program. Art teachers at each school held contests to select two students to receive the "best principal drawing" award. "This contest allows children the opportunity to describe through their own eyes what a principal does," Zellner said. "Some of the pictures we receive are so accurate it's scary!" Zellner said the first "Draw Your School Principal" contest was held three years ago at Texas A&M for the International Network of Principals' Centers. The contest included student drawings from Taiwan, Florida, Texas and California. "The contest was such a huge success three years ago that we wanted to bring it back this year with ALI," Zellner said. "This year, the art teachers and children have shown an even greater interest in making this an annual contest, whether or not we have a conference that coincides." The students' artwork will be on display Nov. 16 at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center in the George Bush Presidential Library Complex. ALI will sponsor an ice cream party for the winners at 4 p.m., and The Principal's Center will honor the winners with certificates. Betts Davis with the George Bush Presidential Library will provide the easels for the artwork display. Parents, art teachers and principals are also invited to attend.
