Callahan Receives Scholar Award At International Academy

3/6/06

By Jenna Smith

Jamie Callahan, assistant professor of human resource development (HRD), was awarded the Early Career Scholar Award at the Academy of Human Resource Development's (AHRD) 2006 International Research Conference in Columbus, Ohio. Callahan was awarded based on the significance of her work, productivity and innovativeness.

"This is a great honor for me," Callahan said, "but it is also a real testament to the support that I've received from my colleagues, program, department and college. I've been fortunate to have won several awards for my research, but the real rewards are the 'silent trophies' I've received when my students have been successful with their research and publishing."

The award recognizes an outstanding HRD scholar in the early stages of his or her career, i.e. seven years or less after being granted his or her highest earned academic degree, who has made identifiable and significant contributions in scholarly research to the field of HRD. The setting in which the nominee has made the scholarly contributions can include academia, government, non-profit or business/industry.

Callahan's research has explored the sociological influences of emotion in organizations as it relates to HRD. She is an advocate for social justice within HRD, which, for a field that works so closely with management structures of organizations, can seem a bit risky, she said.

"I focused on a strategy of taking the field of Human Resource Development to broader audiences while trying to create a voice within the field itself," Callahan said. "I think it is my curiosity for exploring new and very rewarding, but potentially risky, areas of study that, in part, intrigued the awards committee."

The AHRD is the premier human resource development research organization globally, with their vision being to Lead Human Resource Development in Research. Unlike other professional organizations, the academy is a global organization, with conferences being held in the U.S., Europe and Asia each year.

The Texas A&M Human Resource Development program has been profoundly impacted by the academy. The program now ranks in the Top 5 nationally. Each year, Texas A&M brings a competitive number of graduate students to the conference to participate in the premier research course, join in professional development activities, formulate and extend research agendas, link scholarship and practice, present research, and build relationships within the HRD community.

"The biggest support of the academy has been the opportunity for scholars to network and collaborate with insightful colleagues from all over the world," Callahan said. "Within the broader field of HRD, this award helps position Texas A&M to emerge as the top program in our field in the near future."
