Doctoral Students Named TCALL Research Fellows10/17/05 By Jenna Smith Lisa Flores and Joellen Coryell, doctoral students in the College of Education and Human Development, were honored as research fellows at the Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning (TCALL) reception on Oct. 6, 2005. Lisa Flores, second-year doctoral student in Hispanic studies, will focus her research on the transition of ESL students in adult literacy programs to other educational programs. "The people at TCALL are very open and welcoming," Flores said. "By naming me a TCALL fellow, I will be able to continue my studies in the doctoral program and participate in some valid research." Joellen Coryell, third-year doctoral student in adult learning, will determine themes among adult education, language acquisition for English-language learners and distance education. "The TCALL research fellows will provide me the time and guidance necessary to do important research," Coryell said. "I'll also have the opportunity to have an insider's look in how to conduct research and get my work published." In its first year, the TCALL Research Fellows provides monetary support and guidance to doctoral students with an interest in adult learning and literacy. A major benefit of the program is that students don't have to reside on the College Station campus to take advantage of the research and networking opportunities. "I can do my research from home," Coryell said. "It's great to have an opportunity like this without being tied to a given location." Dominique Chlup, director of TCALL, used her experiences as a Fellow at the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL) to create the TCALL Research Fellows. "I wanted other students to have a similar experience to the one I had [as a doctoral student at Harvard] in terms of making connections in the field, conducting research and being afforded a generous fellowship award," Chlup said. "However, we are taking the TCALL fellowships above and beyond what I did at Harvard." "I was so grateful for my time as a NCSALL Fellow that I wanted others to have a similar opportunity," Chlup said. "We hope to continue to receive, annually, the fellowship funding to recruit other wonderful scholars interested in adult education and adult literacy/family literacy to Texas A&M."
