Joe Pirtle, former superintendent of Belton ISD, was honored with the coveted Golden Deeds for Education Award at the 24th Annual Administrative Leadership Institute's (ALI) noon awards luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006. Johnny Veselka, executive director of the Texas Association of School Administrators, presented Pirtle the award.
"We couldn't be the organization we are today without the leadership from people like Joe Pirtle," Veselka said. Virginia Collier, co-director of ALI , added "Joe is one of those gentle people who provide exceptional leadership. His dedication to education has never wavered."
Having been involved in education for the past 44 years, Pirtle's commitment to education can be seen in his involvement in education associations such as the American and Texas Associations of School Administrators. In addition, he is actively involved in his community, even more so after his retirement from Belton ISD in 1997. He has served as President of the Belton Chamber of Commerce and on the Board of Directors for the Belton Education Enrichment Foundation and received the Belton Outstanding Citizen Award for his civic service.

He has received several education awards, including the Texas Outstanding Administrator Award from the Texas Industrial Vocational Association, the Region 12 Superintendent of the Year, a finalist for Superintendent of the Year for the State of Texas and AASA, and a Texas School Business Texas Educator of the Month.
"My mother always told me that to be successful is to be helpful," Pirtle said. "Make everyone you touch in your life feel special. Leave the door open a little bit, always be there and don't give up on them."
