Texas A&M University head football coach Dennis Franchione and Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) president Kay Waggoner shared their teaching experiences Wed. Nov. 15, 2006, at the 24th Annual Administrative Leadership Institute (ALI) banquet in the Clayton Williams Alumni Center.

"We are teachers, educators," Franchione said. "That is the way we look at ourselves as coaches."

Franchione shared stories from his 34 years of coaching including several on how former players have sent him letters or have come back to say that he made a difference in their lives.

"My profession of coaching has changed so much - handling young people has changed so much," he said. "The challenges are much more difficult."

For Waggoner the challenges presented themselves her first year of teaching and almost persuaded her not to pursue a career in education.

"The first year I taught school was the first year that helped me decide to remain in education," she said.

Waggoner described how she went head-to head with one student all year long. She did everything she knew to reach her including attending her games and visiting her home. Waggoner kept questioning herself and asking why she couldn't seem to reach her student, but at the end of that year she realized she had reached her. Saying nothing and with a tear running down her face, Waggoner's student set a plant on her desk.

"I knew I had touched her in some way and had made a difference in her life," Waggoner said.

While their experiences were decidedly different, Waggoner and Franchione both offered similar advice to the group of educators.

"I encourage you to surround yourself with your team," Franchione said. "Share a goal, share a vision. March in the same direction."

Waggoner added that surrounding your self with quality people and retaining them also means offering opportunities that give them the flexibility to fly.

"Be the voice for our kids. Educators through time have always risen to the occasion," she said. "We can touch the future and that is our legacy in this business. Education is a calling. I'm proud to be an educator."

ALI is sponsored by the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development in Texas A&M's College of Education and Human Development, TASA and the Dell Computer Corporation.
