John Hoyle, professor of leadership training, assessment and future studies, was honored for his 25 years of service as director of the Administrative Leadership Institute. This year's conference, "The Extraordinary High School-Leaping Over the Achievement Gap," was dedicated in his honor.
"John truly knows what it means to educate with love," Virginia Collier, clinical associate professor and co-director of ALI, said in her opening remarks.
Hoyle spoke to administrative leaders about where Texas schools could be in the future by understanding the educational trends of today. The keys to being successful by the year 2025 included closing the achievement gap, systems thinking collaboration, shared funding and neighborhood learning communities.
"Now is the time in our history to make a difference," Hoyle said. "Love is the glue that keeps us doing what we do. If you can't love, you can't lead."
Former students and colleagues were asked to say a few words at the end of the session to honor Hoyle.
"When I think of all the stories I have of Dr. Hoyle, what means most to me is him being mine and my family's center for the past four years," Steve Shidemantle, assistant principal at Katy ISD and former graduate assistant for Hoyle, said. "When you're talking to John Hoyle, you're always the most important person in that room."
In recognition of his service, Hoyle was presented with a framed cover of the 25th Annual Administrative Leadership Institute with signatures from all participants.
"What light shines on me comes from the lights within you," Hoyle told his friends and colleagues. "The lights that we shine for kids everywhere."
The two-day ALI conference gave educators the opportunity to learn to address the complex problems of the modern high school by listening to educational leaders that were creatively and successfully meeting that challenge.
