HRD Program Offers April Training And Development Certification Program

Both beginning and advanced training and development practitioners will soon have the opportunity to polish their skills and earn certification right here on the Texas A&M University campus, April 22-27, 2007. The Human Resource Development (HRD) program in the College of Education and Human Development will provide a weeklong seminar leading to a Certificate in Training and Development. Registration for the April program is open now through April 8.

Larry Dooley, coordinator of the certification program, noted that in addition to earning a certificate as a Certified Trainer, participants would also be eligible to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) upon completion of the course.

"The goal of our certificate program is to bring in people from industry who are trainers in their particular field," Dooley said. "We want to give the participants an opportunity to interact with both practitioners and scholars alike."

The program is an intensive hands-on, competency-based program that will be based on the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implementation and Evaluation) model, which consists of five systematic steps used to create instructional products for a variety of settings. Each phase represents a series of tasks that ensure development efforts stay on target. The model has built-in planning activities, quality assurance checkpoints and feedback cycles.

"Our program will present the ADDIE model through a real-world corporate training perspective," Dooley added.

The April program will be presented by some of the most well-known professors and practitioners who will reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing HRD professionals. Moreover, the program will cover such topics as integrating cutting-edge technologies and discovering new methods of measuring and evaluating training programs.

"Our speakers have individually delivered educational speeches, presentations and papers across the globe, and they continue to actively consult in public, private and non-profit institutions," Dooley said. "They have all been recognized many times for their achievements and leadership in the HRD field."

The 2007 program is a continuation of a 1991 effort to begin a national certification program. Since that time, Texas A&M has joined forces with other major universities as well as International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) chapters and ASTD chapters across the country to enable a broad network to reach a national audience of trainers who desire certification and recognition of their varied professional skills.

"A long-term goal of mine is to internalize this certificate, specifically reaching out to business leaders and front line trainers in Mexico," Dooley said. "There is a real need in Mexico for their practitioners to understand the science of training."
