Second Annual Children's Principal Art Contest To Be Held Nov. 1510/30/06
By Jenna Kujawski
Ever wonder how your child might view his or her principal? Is he or she nice, stern or pretty cool? School children in the Brazos Valley will soon have the opportunity to show off their artistic skills by using art to demonstrate how they view their school principal.
"The goal of this art project is to celebrate the work and dedication that our school leaders bring to their campuses and the communities they serve," said Luana Zellner, director of the Principals' Center at Texas A&M University.
In its second consecutive year, the "Children's Perceptions of the School Leader" Art Contest will take place Nov. 15 from 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. at the College Station Hilton Hotel. Last year's event, which had over 20 entries representing five school districts in the Brazos Valley, was a huge success. This year's event promises to be even bigger, as organizers have sent invitations to all elementary, middle and high schools in the Brazos Valley.
"Over the years I have asked principals to have their students draw pictures of them as their school leader," Zellner said. "It gives children an opportunity to illustrate their view of the principal as well as an opportunity for principals to see how they are viewed by the children they serve. Last year we had some great pictures of school leaders."
In early September, students from the Brazos Valley submitted a drawing of their campus principal, along with a one-paragraph description of either their principal or the school that they attend. Each campus was responsible for selecting one drawing to represent their campus at the art contest. Upon selection, student artists, parents and the campus art teacher and principal are invited to attend an ice cream party to recognize the students for their artwork. Each artist and their school will also receive a special award for their participation. Awards and refreshments will be provided through the support of the Barbara Bush Literacy Corps.
"The art contest has become a writing contest as well. Principals have asked their students to write a description of their [the principal] job," Zellner said. "The activity has become a wonderful way to gage students' perceptions as well as show off their talents in writing and drawing."
The art contest will be held as a part of the Annual 2006 Administrative Leadership Institute (ALI), to be held November 15 - 16. John Hoyle,'57, a nationally renowned professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development, will again facilitate ALI. The event, co-sponsored by Dell, Texas A&M and the Texas Association of School Administrators, brings together superintendents, central office administrators and campus-level leaders from across Texas to discuss and learn about current issues and challenges facing leaders in the state's public schools. This year's theme is "The Best of Texas: Exciting Practices in Closing the Achievement Gap in Secondary Schools."
