Shirley Neeley, Grant Teaff To Speak On Ethical Leadership Wednesday11/15/05 Courtesy University Relations Shirley Neeley, Texas commissioner of education, and Grant Teaff, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, will share their views on the hot topic of ethical leadership at the 23rd Annual Administrative Leadership Institute (ALI) Wednesday and Thursday (Nov. 16-17) at Texas A&M University. Organizers say the purpose of the institute is to discuss the power of ethical leadership in the daily lives of school leaders and policy-makers. John Hoyle, director of the Administrative Leadership Institute, said he hopes ALI will help promote the importance of ethical leadership for Texas schools and children. He said the recent announcement that President George Bush is requiring White House staff members to take such ethics training makes the conference all the more timely. "The institute is designed to help us all strengthen our resolve to do the right things in the right ways," Hoyle said. "If we do, our children and youth will remember the spiritual good in leadership." Teaff will speak Wednesday on "Ethical Behavior in Tough Situations" at 1:30 p.m. in the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center. Neeley will follow with "Ethical Decisions for All Texas Children and Youth" at 7 p.m., also in the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center. Student winners of the "Draw Your School Principal" contest will have their artwork displayed throughout the day Wednesday at the Annenberg Center. The institute will provide ice cream for the children, art teachers, principals and parents. Thursday's activities will take place at the College Station Hilton Hotel and Conference Center where participants will be led through the Dell Intelligent Classroom. "The Intelligent Classroom is the interaction of students, teachers and technology that enables curriculum to accommodate a variety of learning styles," Hoyle said. "The combination of multimedia learning and the interconnectedness of information on the Internet enables educational institutions to move to an 'Interactive System'." The institute will close with the presentation of the Golden Deeds for Education Award to Rep. Bob Griggs during a luncheon from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hilton Hotel and Conference Center. The award is considered the highest recognition for distinguished service to education in the state of Texas. "We will present the Golden Deeds award to Rep. Bob Griggs for his long service to children and courage in doing the right thing for children and public education in Texas," Hoyle said. "Griggs' outstanding leadership in the Texas State Legislature will hopefully persuade more leaders to step up to the plate as legislators and fight the good fight for our children." The institute is also co-sponsoring the Principals and Aspiring Principals Academy, which will focus on issues an aspiring principal needs to know. It will take place on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. at the Hilton. "The main purpose of this year's academy is to address the issues new principals and assistant principals face when they walk in the door," Luana Zellner, director of The Principals' Center, said. "The academy is also a way for new administrators to link with others who are in similar positions." The Administrative Leadership Institute is sponsored by the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development at Texas A&M University, Texas Association of School Administrators and Dell Computer Corporation.
