Slattery Publishes Second Edition to Curriculum Development Book

5/30/06

By Jenna Smith

Patrick Slattery, professor of curriculum development and educational philosophy in the Departments of Teaching, Learning & Culture and Educational Administration and Human Resource Development, recently published the second edition to his book titled Curriculum Development in the Postmodern Era.

Slattery's first edition was the first book to introduce and analyze contemporary concepts of curriculum development in relation to postmodernism.

"I believe that curriculum development in the postmodern era must foreground critical and prophetic public discourse for individual transformation and social renewal. Teachers and their students must work collaboratively as partners in the cause of justice and ecological sustainability," Slattery said. "I believe that educators must advance a renewed public discourse for justice with their students-a discourse that can direct our classrooms and curriculum toward social work, environmental work, critical prophetic resistance, and ultimately, social consequences of value."

Since its publication in 1995, the curriculum studies field has grown. Slattery's second edition contains three new chapters exploring the contemporary issues in education, including testing and accountability, texts, globalization and international relations, religion and theology, race and gender, and gay and lesbian issues.

"In short, the world is my classroom, and the arts are my vehicle for exploring the terrain," Slattery said. "My goal is to challenge students to connect the subject matter of the curriculum to the lived world experiences of their surround community. I ultimately hope to inspire them to become prophetic voices for justice in schools and society."
