TCALL Announces 2008-2009 Barbara Bush Family Literacy Fellowships

2/26/08

For the second time, The Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning (TCALL) is offering $100,000 in Barbara Bush Fellowships for the 2008-2009 academic year. Harriet Vardiman Smith, interim acting director of TCALL, said each fellowship will consist of a one-year award and will be available for doctoral students willing to conduct research in the area of family literacy.

"The research projects are an exceptionally unique learning opportunity to work closely with the permanent center director, and/or until that person is selected, with a designated faculty member for possible publication and national conference presentations," Vardiman Smith said.

All doctoral students at the university regardless of field are encouraged to apply for the fellowship. Depending on the applicant pool, Vardiman Smith said students could be awarded anywhere from $25,000 to $50,000. Recipients will be announced at the 2008 Houston Celebration of Reading on April 24. The event is an annual fundraiser hosted by former President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush that hosts best-selling authors who read aloud from their books.

Applications are due by midnight April 1. For further information, fellowship guidelines and the application packet, visit the TCALL Web site.
