TCALL Announces Adult Education and Literacy Fellowships5/8/06 By Jenna Smith Doctoral students at Texas A&M University pursuing studies in adult education, adult literacy or family literacy are eligible to apply for the 2006-2007 Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning (TCALL) Fellowships. Dominique Chlup, director of TCALL, said the fellowships are a way for TCALL to enhance the success of doctoral students with a background and commitment to adult education and adult and family literacy. "The fellowship is intended to give fellows the opportunity to work with and be involved in research with TCALL," Chlup said. "Eligible students are not required to live in the Bryan-College Station area but must be willing to make themselves available for meetings and research." The two $25,000 fellowships consist of a one-year award that may be used to offset the cost of tuition, fees and maintenance while a student is enrolled at Texas A&M. To be eligible, doctoral students must be enrolled full-time at Texas A&M and be able to commit approximately 350 hours over the course of the academic year to research projects, conferences and meetings. Chlup used her experiences as a Fellow at Harvard's National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL) to create the TCALL Research Fellows. "I wanted other students to have a similar experience to the one I had [as a doctoral student at Harvard] in terms of making connections in the field, conducting research and being afforded a generous fellowship award," Chlup said. "However, we are taking the TCALL fellowships above and beyond what I did at Harvard. The TCALL fellows are truly being mentored into academia. Our fellows travel and present with me at national, state and regional conferences, conduct their own line of research under my direction, and have opportunities to publish peer-reviewed articles." Interested students are required to submit a resume, cover letter, and a 3-4 page proposal indicating their background and interests in adult education and/or adult literacy by July 31, 2006, to: Dr. Dominique Chlup, Director of TCALL, Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning, College of Education and Human Development, Department of EAHR, Texas A&M University, 4477 TAMU, College Station, TX 77843-4477.
