Dozens of youngsters got to try their hands at solving the world's problems - particularly those centering on sustainability - during the International Sustainable World: Energy, Engineering and Environment Project (ISWEEEP) Olympiad, which was co-sponsored by the Texas A&M North Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (NTSTEM) Project.
The ISWEEEP Olympiad stimulates interest in sustainability-related problems and practical solutions to these problems. Sixth-graders through eighth-graders in the United States enter projects into the junior division while ninth-grade through 12th-grade students from around the world competed in the senior division. As an institutional partner, professors involved in the NTSTEM Project served as judges for the student projects featured in the Olympiad.
The competition attracted students from 53 countries representing six continents, says Robert M. Capraro, associate professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture at Texas A&M University and co-director of the NTSTEM Project. "From this competition, it is clear that the United States can compete on the international landscape for developing a sustainable future," Capraro declares.
Faculty members from the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M who judged the projects at the event included Jim Scheurich, department head for educational administration and human resource development; Capraro; Mary Margaret Capraro, assistant professor in teaching, learning and culture; Valerie Hill-Jackson, clinical assistant professor in teaching, learning and culture; and graduate student Melanie Woods.
Other representatives from Texas A&M attending ISWEEP included Dr. Ann Kenimer, associate dean in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; Dr. Luciana Barroso, associate professor in the Dwight Look College of Engineering; Dr. Gerri Maxwell, project coordinator for NTSTEM; and graduate students Stephanie Fisseler, Kristen Huggins, Danielle Kotara, Michael Muzheve, Serkan Ozel, Ebrar Yetkiner, Sanser Bulu and Jamal Young.
