Three Education Doctoral Students Selected As TCALL Barbara Bush Fellows

Rebekah Haynes, Petra Robinson and Megan Terry were announced as the 2007-2008 Barbara Bush Fellows by The Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning (TCALL) at Texas A&M University . Each will receive $33,333 in fellowship funding made possible by the generous support of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.

"I am incredibly excited about the prospect of working with our three new fellows who will start their fellowships at the end of August," Dominique Chlup, director of TCALL, said. "These impressive students are deeply committed to fostering strong family literacy programs here in Texas."

The Barbara Bush Fellowships at TCALL give Ph.D. candidates the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research in the field of family literacy. These generous fellowships consist of a one-year award, which may be used to offset the cost of travel expenses to conferences, dissertation research, and/or tuition, fees, and maintenance while a student is enrolled at Texas A&M University.  During their fellowship year, students will have the opportunity to present their work at national family literacy conferences and publish their research in peer-reviewed journals.

"I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to provide mentoring, academic training and research opportunities for doctoral students at Texas A&M in incredibly worthwhile areas such as family literacy," Chlup said.  

Haynes, a doctoral student in school psychology, will focus her research on literacy found in the home environment, such as shared book reading, as well as factors contributing to the parent-child relationship.

Robinson, a fall 2007 adult education doctoral student, will assess the impact family literacy programs have on various elements of the participants' family life, including economic impact, community involvement, parental engagement, personal development and self-esteem, safety and health environment and accountability, and literacy levels in family units.

Terry, also a doctoral student in school psychology, will create measures for the Home Literacy Environment Test so that it can be used by a variety of researchers and professionals to improve literacy in the home.

"The addition of these three new fellows to the fellowship program at TCALL means that we have more than doubled in size. In addition, we anticipate having two more TCALL fellows that will be selected this summer," Chlup said. "This is exactly the direction I hoped our fellowship program would take, expanding each year and providing more students with the necessary funds to pursue their doctoral work."

The fellows will be formally introduced as the Barbara Bush Fellows by former First Lady Barbara Bush at the Celebration of Reading Program April 26 in Houston.
