The 25th Annual Administrative Leadership Institute (ALI), scheduled for Nov. 14-15, 2007, will honor two individuals who have greatly contributed to Texas public schools while participants explore "The Extraordinary High School-Leaping Over the Achievement Gap."

Fred Brent, superintendent of Anderson-Shiro ISD, was selected to receive the first-ever Hoyle Award in Educational Leadership while Leonard Merrell, retired superintendent of Katy ISD, will be awarded the coveted Golden Deeds Award for his service to public education.

"I love the way Dr. Brent is so kid-oriented. I can always stand and fight beside a leader who has that major objective," wrote an Anderson-Shiro teacher in Brent's nomination letter.

Brent, who is a recent graduate of the doctoral program in public school administration at Texas A&M University, previously served as an administrator in Navasota, Orange and Little Cypress/Mauriceville before becoming superintendent at Anderson-Shiro.

The Hoyle Award in Educational Leadership was developed by former students of John Hoyle, professor of K-12 administration and chair of ALI, to honor him as one of the "living legends" in educational administration due to his inspiring work as an author, researcher and professor at Texas A&M.

Merrell will join a long list of distinguished recipients when he receives the Golden Deeds Award. The award is considered the highest recognition for distinguished service to education in the state of Texas and is given to an individual from any profession who has consistently supported Texas students and teachers through his/her positive impact on public education.

Before retiring from Katy ISD, Merrell brought the district to recognized status despite more rigorous testing standards, exponential growth and diverse demographics. He initiated a whole-district approach to junior achievement that resulted in offering the dynamic curriculum to over 35,000 students each year.  He served as president of the Texas Association of School Administrators from 2001-2002 and as chair of the Texas Center for Educational Research from 1998-1999.  In 1998, he was named the American Association of School Administrators Texas State Superintendent of the Year.

Both Brent and Merrell will receive their awards at the ALI awards luncheon on Nov. 15 at 11:45 a.m. at the College Station Hilton Hotel and Conference Center.

Sponsored by the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development at Texas A&M University, the Texas Association of School Administrators, and Dell Computer Corporation, ALI is designed to focus on a critical issue that will help school leaders create or transform schools to help all children become successful students and people.

This year's conference will give educators the opportunity to learn to address the complex problems of the modern high school by listening to educational leaders that are creatively and successfully meeting that challenge. Roger Staubach, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, NFL Hall of Fame inductee and founder of the The Staubach Company, will serve as the motivational speaker at the opening banquet, and John Hoyle will be honored for his 25 years of service to ALI at the closing ceremony.
