How do you cite sources within the text using APA formatting?

Three key elements: author’s last name (or authors’ last names), year of publication, and page number

Single author: Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Loren, 1998, p. 263).

Two authors: The authors state “Tighter gun control in the United States erodes Second Amendment rights” (Nelson & Brown, 2000, p. 76).

Three to five authors:

  • First time you cite the source: Legal experts counter the argument by noting that the current spike in gun violence in America compels law makers to adjust gun laws (Jones, Smith, Michaels, & Thomas, 2000, p. 4).
  • Second time you cite the source: Legal experts counter the argument by noting that the current spike in gun violence in America compels law makers to adjust gun laws (Jones et al., 2000, p. 4).

Six or more authors: The militia was considered a “good and able-bodied force” (Miller et al., 2003, p. 89).
